My group began out close to San Juan Bautista, a city 25 miles South, so I carpooled with a buddy with a van who might match each of our bikes. We did an out and again, climbing San Juan Grade and dropping down onto the Monterey Bay Facet, then out Previous stage highway which ends at first of the De Anza path, an off-road route again to San Juan Bautista. That might have been a sensible choice if it hadn’t rained a lot this previous weekend. I’ll go do this sooner or later. This was an incredible experience on a wonderful fall day. The one drawback was the highway was fairly unhealthy, with plenty of cracks and potholes, on the San Benito county aspect, although it bought significantly better on the Monterey County aspect. This made for an adventurous experience on the descent of San Juan Grade on the best way again. Thankfully, my bike is taken into account a gravel bike and has fats tires so dealt with it properly. We had an incredible lunch in San Juan Bautista afterward.
